December- View from the Rectory

'Tis the season to be……..different

The autumn at St Mary’s has seen a number of new initiatives and a twist on the familiar. We ran a four week short course called Faith Pictures; we hosted a Light Stop on Halloween (All Hallows Eve) for children, and the Remembrance Sunday service included our young people from Rainbows, Brownies and Guides playing a more active role in commemorating those whose sacrifice gained our freedom. We upgraded our boiler to provide more efficient heating for the church and we have also launched ‘Open the Book’, a consultation with local parents about how we can provide more relevant services for our families. The website has also had a makeover- do take a look and let us know what you think. Our values of being Faithful Hopeful Joyful and Prayerful are more in evidence than ever.

Advent Sunday is also re-commitment Sunday when members of the church family here at St Mary’s will be challenged to look afresh at what being a Christian means in the context of living here in our village. This issue you can read about one of our ongoing initiatives, our fellowship lunches, where a dedicated team provide a monthly opportunity for food, friendship and fellowship for local people.

We have invited children from our local school, Brownies, Guides and Rainbows to express their creativity through #FollowTheStar2018 making stars which will eventually form one giant new art installation to be created by Epiphany Sunday (6th January 2019) so do come along and see this.

But we still offer what you’d expect a village church to do this Christmas season. With this issue you will find details of our services which include Advent Carols, 9 lessons and Carols, Christingle and Crib Service, Midnight Communion and Christmas Day communion. Do join us as we celebrate together the birth of our Saviour in song, story and scripture over this Christmastide.

This is my first Christmas as Rector at St Mary’s and I wanted to mark it by sending each household one of our specially designed Christmas cards by Heather Fooks. Do watch out for it. May it encourage you to step inside our beautiful building at some point this Christmas season and receive Christ’s blessing, peace, hope and love.

Every prayer and blessing for this Advent, Christmastide and New Year.

Rev’d David Coleman, Rector
