Prayers through the day

A sequence of prayers from "Celebrating Common Prayer" (c) The European Province of the Society of St. Francis 1992

Entitled "The Hours of the Day", these are short prayers reflecting on the passion of Christ that can be used wherever you are.

EARLY MORNING – The First Hour

Eternal Jesus,

who in the early morning

offered yourself to the scorn and insults

   of your enemies:

at this same hour,

give us, we pray, your grace and your mercy,

that throughout this day we may find joy and peace

   in all that serves your praise and glory;

for you are now alive,

and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit,

God for ever.  Amen.

MORNING – The Third Hour

O Lord Jesus Christ,

Son of the living God,

who at the third hour of the day

was led forth to the pain of the cross

for the salvation of the world:

we pray that by the virtue of your most sacred passion

you would blot out all our sins

and mercifully bring us

to the glory of your blessedness;

for you are now alive,

and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit,

God for ever.  Amen.

MIDDAY – The Sixth Hour

O most gracious Jesus,

our Lord and our God,

who at this hour bore our sins

   in your own body on the tree,

that we, being dead to sin,

might live to righteousness:

have mercy upon us,

both now and at the hour of our death,

and grant to us, your servants,

and all who remember your passion,

a godly and peaceful life in this present world

and through your grace

eternal glory in the life to come;

where, with the Father and the Holy Spirit,

you are alive and reign, now and for ever.  Amen.

AFTERNOON – The Ninth Hour

O Lord Jesus Christ,

Son of the living God,

set your passion, cross and death

   between your judgement and our souls,

now and in the hour of our death.

Grant mercy and grace to the living,

rest to the departed,

to your Church peace and concord

and to us sinners forgiveness,

and everlasting life and glory;

for, with the Father and the Holy Spirit,

you are alive and reign, God, now and for ever.  Amen.

EVENING – The ‘Completing’ Hour

Keep watch, dear Lord,

with those who wake, or watch or weep this night,

and give your angels charge over those who sleep.

Tend the sick,

give rest to the weary,

sustain the dying, calm the suffering,

and pity the distressed;

all for your love’s sake, O Christ our Redeemer.  Amen.
